Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University

The foundation of education in Adjara began in 1893 with the establishment of a Boys’ Gymnasium in Batumi, followed by a Women’s Gymnasium in 1900. Over time, these institutions evolved into a Pedagogical Institute and later a Teachers’ Institute with multiple faculties.

In 1938, the institute was named after Shota Rustaveli and gained strong academic support from leading Georgian scholars and Tbilisi State University. By 1945, it became a Pedagogical Institute and continued expanding with new buildings and facilities. On September 3, 1990, Batumi State University was officially established. The university introduced new faculties such as Law, Economics, and Medicine and adopted the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree system, marking its transformation into a modern higher education institution.
